Under the 2019 Master Plan, the current land that the historic Bedok Football Stadium is located is slated to be developed into Residential zoning in the future.
Iconic Stadium during the S-League heydays
During the inaugural season of Singapore's first football league (S-League) in 1996, the Bedok Stadium was packed with more than 3,000 spectators cheering for their home team - Geylang United Football Club.
Boasting the likes of players such as Fandi Ahmad, David Lee (yes you heard right, the David Lee I took a photo with), R. Sasikumar, Kadir Yahaya, a young Zulkarnaen Zainal as well as Iranian Mohammad Khakpour, Geylang United won the inaugural season of the S-League, including clinching the Singapore FA Cup.
Master Plan shows future zoning as "Residential"
The latest Master Plan map showing the future development and rezoning of land in Singapore shows an interesting change. On the current plot of land sits the Bedok Stadium, the Singapore Sepak Takraw Federation, Bedok Sports Hall and Bedok Tennis Centre, while the rest of the land are designated as carparks
However, in the URA Master Plan Zoning Map, the same plot of land in the future sees it divided into 2 zonings - Residential Zoning (brown color) with Gross Plot Ratio of 3.5 and Sports/ Recreation Zoning (green colour). Using pure layman deductions, what the map suggests is that the size of the current sports facilities will be reduced significantly compared to what exists today
Private Residential Development or future BTO?
With this zoning in place, it is currently unclear if this plot of land will be developed into a private condominium or a new upcoming BTO. But the changes and development will certainly add more vibrancy and diversity to this quiet and quaint neighbourhood. Stay tuned for more updates!
