Bedok Town is a mature residential town that was developed in 1973 but has its name known as early as 1604 in Manuel Godinho de Eredia's map of Singapore (left image, named "SuneBodo" for Sungei Bedok) and is one of the early native place names in existence around the time of Sir Stamford Raffles.

There are several references to how the name "Bedok" came about - from the Malay word "bedoh" referring to the huge drum used for calling people to the mosque (where a prominent mosque existed in the 1950s at Jalan Bilal), to the Malay term "Biduk" referring to the small fishing boat that was common along the fishing villages around the area. Today, it is sometimes jokingly used to described a beating heart (my heart goes "Bedok Bedok") when a boy meets a girl he likes.

Today, Bedok is a mix of chill, rustic vibes and modern urban lifestyle with its mix of HDB 1970s to 2020s housing. Bedok Town will be undergoing some interesting and exciting developments and rejuvenation under the government Master Plan in the upcoming years. If you would like to read up on these plans, feel free to hop over to our "East-Sider Insider" blog to read up on our articles regarding plans for Bedok Town.

Bedok Town's location, due to it's proximity to the East Coast, reserves a charm and demand among buyers who are attracted to its location. The upcoming East Coast Plan as well as the construction of the Thomson East Coast MRT Line (Sungei Bedok and Bedok South) slated to be completed in 2024, will bring greater vibrancy and value to homes nearby.

At the same time, if you are thinking of selling your HDB homes in Bedok and upgrading to a new/resale condominium, there are several existing and upcoming new condo launches along the Tanah Merah MRT area which presents ideal choices for owning a private property. Did you know that Tampines is the only town in Singapore boasting of North, South (known as Central), East and West? That's right, despite being the 3rd largest town in Singapore in terms of geographical area, in Tampines, residents are spread out across Tampines North, Tampines East, Tampines Central and Tampines West!

Before Tampines developed to be the bustling way it is today, it actually started off in the 1970s as a wasteland. In fact, when the first new flats were built and being offered, many residents were skeptical due to the fact that Tampines seemed to be too "ulu" and far off, especially from its more popular "cousin" Bedok New Town. In those early 1980s days, the MRT station line ended at Tanah Merah and had to take a bus back to Tampines.

In years to come, it has undergone a major transformation of more than 68,000 flats being built and is home to close to 260,000 residents. Curious to know more about interesting facts on Tampines and also upcoming new plans/development to this town? Click on below to read up on our blog articles

Tampines New Town holds many memories and familiarity for me. Apart from residing in Blk 936 Tampines Ave 5 for my upper primary, secondary, JC, National Service and young working adult life, it has shaped the way I am today. Seeing the transformation of Tampines Central, playing at the fruits playground of Tampines Central Park, learning PC programming at Blk 201 Tampines St 21, playing Futsal at Tampines SAFRA, etc, I hope to use my familiarity of the environment of Tampines to market and sell your properties! The Kallang/Dakota town is a mature neighbourhood that is strategically located in the city fringe, but started off housing most of the new, blue collared families who had been part of the industrial evolution in the early days of Singapore's independence. The Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) flats at Dakota is one such example.

With the evolving times in the past 20-30 years, it has developed into a vibrant and exciting town that has seen a host of new towering flats, upcoming developments and future potential. Kallang is indeed going to continue its development in the near future and if you are curious, do read up more of the Master Plan Kallang in our property blog articles.

Having been living in this area of Kallang/Dakota/Geylang up to this current point, this town holds dear to my heart. In fact, it traces back to a longer history. My paternal grandparents used to live in a shophouse in Geylang Lorong 14, and my maternal great grandmother (a former temple medium) used to operate from a Chinese temple in Geylang in the earlier days. I also used to stay in a studio apartment in Geylang Lor 39, a HDB along Sims Drive and currently reside along Dakota.
